Hannah’s Story
headspace Work & Study
Hannah, aged 21, joined headspace Onkaparinga’s Work and Study program in early 2022. Having previously completed a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education, Hannah decided to further her education, enrolling in a Diploma in Early Childhood Education at Flinders University. To coincide with her studies, Hannah also wished to secure a casual employment position.
Michelle worked with Hannah as her Employment Specialist in the headspace Work & Study program. Hannah explained she had experienced difficulties with her previous study including finding the motivation to attend class and completing assignments.
With this in mind, Michelle helped Hannah to explore options that could support her to complete the diploma, such as a Study ACCESS Plan and other flexible options.
After some discussions, Hannah determined that she would benefit from a more hands-on learning approach and Michelle was able to support Hannah to withdraw from the diploma before the census date to avoid financial penalty.
Michelle worked with Hannah to build a resume and complete mock interviews.
Michelle attended a job expo to network with businesses in the childcare industry and was able to secure a job interview for Hannah.
Hannah went on to accept a position as an Early Childhood Educator at Goodstart Early Learning and plans to enrol in MADEC’s Diploma in Early Childhood which will allow Hannah to work as part of her study completion.
Michelle continues to support Hannah in her new role, helping her to communicate with Centrelink and also working alongside Hannah’s headspace clinician to help manage anxiety in the workplace.
When reflecting on her experience with the headspace Work & Study program, Hannah expressed appreciation for being able to talk to someone face-to-face about real-life issues and challenges.
“I have been employed for over a month now as an Early Childhood educator and absolutely love it. I have seen the benefits in all aspects of my life including my mental health, physical health, and overall wellbeing. I continue to receive ongoing support allowing me to feel secure in my employment as I know if there are any issues I can reach out to my worker for guidance and assistance,” she said.
Hannah strongly encourages other young people to join the program and says, “your future self will thank you for it.”
