Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families were invited to Sonder’s free movie screening of The Sapphires
On Friday 13 January 2023, Sonder held its first of many movie screenings supporting its journey to becoming a more culturally safe and competent organisation.
This initiative was led by Sonder’s Reconciliation Action Plan Project Group which guide and direct our commitment to reconciliation outcomes and supports us in working towards our shared vision for reconciliation – Better Care, Better Health & Better Access through a culturally safe workplace which builds understanding, respect, and shared responsibility along with community leadership.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members were invited to attend the movie screening of The Sapphires, and a small number of tickets were also made available for Sonder staff.
Odeon Star cinema in Semaphore was the perfect venue for this school holidays activity on a stifling hot day.
Over 30 attendees watched The Sapphires with the company of their family and friends, enjoying the peace and quiet of a private cinema and a handful of delicious snacks, including popcorn.
This movie was chosen as it is a favourite of some of the community members in Sonder’s Aboriginal Health Reference Group. Sonder would like to sincerely thank the Reference Group members for their time and input towards making this a successful event.
About the movie
Set in 1968, The Sapphires is based on a true story of four Aboriginal sisters who had never set foot outside of Australia until they were branded as Australia’s answer to The Supremes and dropped into the jungles of Vietnam to entertain the troops.

Sonder looks forward to hosting further movie screenings in the future to bring together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and staff and continue to promote positive cultural relations.
