Join us for Closing the Gap Day on Wednesday 18 May
Sonder invites you to attend Closing the Gap Day, a free, family-friendly event welcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of all ages
Closing the Gap Day is time for all Australians to come together and commit to achieving health equality for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The event provides an opportunity to experience Aboriginal culture and learn about services available across SA to support Aboriginal people to improve their health, wellbeing and other areas of their lives.
This annual event brings all of these important services together in one place to share information and provide individuals with the opportunity to meet the people behind the services.
“Closing the Gap Day is about empowering the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to make informed decisions over their own lives. This celebration is one way to bring the community together, to have fun and to increase the awareness of Aboriginal people’s health needs,” said Sageran Naidoo, CEO at Sonder.
Sonder has celebrated Closing the Gap Day annually for the past 8 years, across different regions of South Australia.
In 2022, with the event growing more popular, the event is being held on Kaurna Country at Adelaide Showground in the Jubilee Pavilion. This news is welcomed as the large indoor and outdoor spaces will allow a more relaxed atmosphere with COVID restrictions easing.
With hundreds of stalls to browse, a deadly line up of entertainment and a free shared lunch for all to enjoy, there is something for everyone in the family.
Included in the entertainment line-up this year is Nathan May and Vonda Last, with Comedian, Sean Choolburra as MC. Stay tuned for further entertainment to be announced.
Uncle Frank Wanganeen and Uncle Moogy Sumner will provide the Welcome to Country ceremony, together with Isaac Hanman on Yidaki (didgeridoo).
This year, Sonder is also hosting a Nunga Marketplace where First Nations businesses and creatives can sell artworks and other merchandise.
Kids and young people will have the opportunity to participate in cultural and fun activities as well as ‘Chill-space,’ a special activity area hosted by SA headspace centres.
“It’s a great social day with mob. Come along and learn about the services that can help you and your family.” – 2018 event attendee.
Closing the Gap Day 2022 will be held on Wednesday 18th May from 11 am – 3 pm in the Jubilee Pavilion at the Adelaide Showground.
