Extended opening hours for mental health support in Northern Adelaide

Mental health support should be available when people need it most – not just during business hours. That’s why Northern Adelaide Head to Health, our free, walk-in mental health service is expanding its weekday opening hours to ensure people can access support when they need it. Located at 23 Gillingham Rd, Elizabeth, the service is open to anyone aged 16 and over, with no appointment, referral, or Medicare card required.

Expanded hours for increased access

Since opening in April 2024, Northern Adelaide Head to Health has operated seven days a week, providing immediate, face-to-face mental health support to people experiencing distress, crisis, or emotional challenges.

Now, Sonder is pleased to announce expanded weekday opening hours, ensuring more people can access care outside of regular business hours.

From next Monday 10 February, Northern Adelaide Head to Health will be open:

  • Monday to Friday: 8.30 am to 10.30 pm
  • Weekends & public holidays: 12 pm to 6.30 pm (unchanged)

This change reflects a growing need for accessible, after-hours mental health support, particularly for people balancing work, family, and other commitments, who may struggle to find time to access during the day.

Breaking down barriers

In Northern Adelaide, demand for mental health services is increasing, particularly as cost-of-living pressures, financial stress, and daily life challenges take a toll on people’s wellbeing. The ability to access free, walk-in support is critical for those experiencing distress or overwhelming personal struggles.

Kelly Stewart, Sonder’s Executive Manager, Mental Health & AOD, highlighted the importance of this change:

“Many people in our community find it difficult to seek care during regular hours because of work, school, or family responsibilities. Others may not realise they need support until later in the evening when challenges feel most overwhelming.”

“It’s another way we are working to reduce barriers to mental health care for people living in Northern Adelaide and surrounding areas. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to reach out when they need support.”

“Our community has told us that seeking care after-hours is difficult. We are listening.”

New name coming soon

From 28 February 2025, Northern Adelaide Head to Health will be renamed Northern Adelaide Medicare Mental Health Centre. While the name and branding will change, the service remains free and accessible – no Medicare card, referral, or appointment required.

This service is delivered by Sonder, and funded by the Australian Government, Adelaide PHN, and Northern Adelaide Local Health Network.
