Mission Australia: Bringing national expertise in alcohol and drug care to the Crisis Stabilisation Centre
As Sonder prepares to open the new Crisis Stabilisation Centre, strong partnerships are central to delivering safe, responsive and holistic care for people experiencing acute mental health distress.
In a recent article, we introduced Ember, one of our key partners supporting the delivery of the service. As part of a short series highlighting the organisations contributing their expertise to the Crisis Stabilisation Centre, we are now pleased to introduce another important partner.
We are proud to be partnering with Mission Australia, a national organisation with more than 165 years of experience supporting people experiencing complex challenges.
Through this partnership, Mission Australia will contribute specialist alcohol and/or other drugs (AOD) expertise to the Crisis Stabilisation Centre, ensuring guests visiting with both mental health and substance use concerns can receive timely and holistic support.
Strengthening the response to co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges
Mission Australia will play an important role in the Centre through the Drug and Alcohol Brief Intervention Team (DABIT), bringing deep expertise in supporting people experiencing drug and alcohol use concerns alongside mental health challenges.
People experiencing mental health crises can often have other support needs, including concerns relating to substance use. The DABIT team will provide specialised assessment, brief intervention and support to help individuals in the moment and connect them with the most appropriate ongoing supports as they leave the centre.
Mission Australia brings significant experience in delivering residential and bed-based services across Australia, including large-scale therapeutic facilities such as Triple Care Farm in NSW, the organisation’s flagship youth residential rehabilitation and treatment program.
This depth of experience will strengthen the Crisis Stabilisation Centre’s ability to support individuals with complex needs and ensure people receive the right support at the right time.
A long-standing partnership
The partnership between Sonder and Mission Australia builds on many years of collaboration across South Australia.
Mission Australia currently partners with Sonder across several services, including Partners Toward Wellbeing, where Mission Australia subcontracts Sonder to deliver mental health support for people with drug and alcohol concerns.
Mission Australia also plays a pivotal role in the Sonder led Medicare Mental Health Centre, in Elizabeth supporting people accessing this walk-in mental health centre with specialist drug and alcohol support and advice.
In addition, Mission Australia works alongside Sonder as a consortium partner across our headspace centres – Adelaide, Onkaparinga, Marion, and Edinburgh North.
These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to helping individuals, along with their families and communities during their rime of need.
