Sonder and First Nations Jiu Jitsu bring you Jiu Jitsu Academy, a free program for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people.

With a strong focus on keeping active, connecting to culture, building resilience and and looking after your wellbeing, you will learn self-defence in a supportive group environment with experienced Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander trainers.

Jiu Jitsu Academy is a 10-week program.

Join us every week for 1 hour and build your confidence and skills in self-defence!

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for Jiu Jitsu Academy, you must:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Be aged between 16 and 25 years old.

Where is the program based?

Jit Jitsu Academy is based at M16 Fight & Fitness, 8/10 Main Street, Seaford SA.

  • Mondays, from 23 January – 27 March 2023
  • 5.30 pm – 6.30 pm

Meet the trainer!

Shane Cook is a proud Wulli Wulli man with many family connections throughout Queensland and Adelaide. He is a fulltime practicing artist, mentor and works in community development, facilitating programs and workshops.

Shane has been facilitating Sonder’s Jiu Jitsu Academy since 2022, to support First Nations people and their families to improve their wellbeing through movement, cultural connection, and community networking.

Shane started his Jiu Jitsu journey 8 years ago.

“My life seems to be much more fulfilling when I’m consistently training in the gym and take care of my physical health. Training plays a huge part in my self care and mental health care plan. The benefits of training and how I feel afterward is something I hope many more people get to experience throughout their lives.”

What is Brazilian jiu jitsu?

Brazilian jiu jitsu is a grappling, self-defence martial art that takes place mostly on the ground. It focuses on technique, leverage and timing over strength.

Learning jiu jitsu can:
  • Improve your fitness.
  • Build your confidence and self esteem.
  • Allow you to defend yourself on your back as well as when standing up.
  • Teach you how to de-escalate potential confrontations.
  • Provide you with the skills to defend yourself against a larger or stronger person.
  • Improve your goal setting skills.
